Gluten Free Saskatoon

Gluten Free sausages on the barbeque

I have always had a soft spot for delicious gluten free sausages and here are the best gluten free sausages in Saskatoon. My husband always makes fun of my obsession with sausages. I have an obsession with bacon, and my love affair for sausages is, at least, equally strong. I could not imagine giving them up after being diagnosed with celiac. Fortunatelly, I did not have to. While bacon mostly comes gluten free naturally, gluten free sausages are a different ball game. Producers often use various wheat products as fillers for their sausages. I had to find sausages that are not only gluten free but also have full flavour and are delicious to taste.

What Sausages Are Gluten Free

So called “Non-Meat Fillers” also known as cereal binders contain some combination of flours (Wheat, Barley and Rye), and oatmeal or even breadcrumbs. These are included in the sausage to make their production cheaper but also their nutritional value is lower. Any such ingredient make them beyond reach of Celiacs. Carefully reading the ingredients list is a must.

If you are like me and like good old fashioned sausages with real ingredients, you will look for quality sausages from local producers. Although some international brands now offer sausages with rice flour fillers, which makes them gluten-free, I like sausages filled with meat.

Where To Find Gluten Free Sausages In Saskatoon

Once I was diagnosed with Celiac, I embarked on a journey of discovering gluten free Saskatoon, which is my second home. In the department of gluten free sausages, I have discovered three gems. They are gluten free, local, and made with ingredients that would please any consumer.

Maggie’s Sausage House & Deli also know simply as “Sausage House & Deli” is a small but unique place off 8th Street within one of the Saskatoon’s commercial districts. This place is not only fully gluten free but is fun. The owner, sausage-maker and salesperson Vlad is always ready for a chat. He will tell you all about the ingredients in his sausages. He will assure you that there cannot be any gluten as he does not use any such ingredient. He will tell you how he came from Poland to Canada many years ago and how he learned sausage-making. Together, you will probably disapprove of the big sausage-making corporations. Here you can purchase a variety of gluten free sausages from mild to spicy, from pork to bison. These will be great for a hardy breakfast, into a stir-fry or for supper with mashed potatoes.

Prairie Meats is the bigger company in Saskatoon. This family owned business has been around for over 30 years. With three locations in Saskatoon, it is always convenient to find one not far from you. This place is not exclusively gluten free so always ask what sausages are gluten free. There is a wide range to choose from. I have been their customer for years and I have only good words to say.

JB’s Sausage Supplies is a bit hidden in the industrial part of Saskatoon but their gluten free selection of sausages, sauces and spices is worth the trip. You can also order online, and have it shipped. They have a dedicated gluten free section and although they are rather a large-scale supplier, their retail store in Saskatoon can put a smile on the face of anyone looking for delicious gluten free products.
