Gluten Free Island Guide: Oahu, Hawaii

Honolulu Beach Gluten Free Oahu

I have eaten at many amazing gluten free places in Oahu. My husband and I love the mix of beautiful beaches and big city life on the island. The night life in Honolulu is very vibrant with lots going on.

I am sharing some delicious gluten free places that you can enjoy.

My favourite area was Waikiki, so I will highlight places to eat in that area as well. I loved the ability to walk to the beach in under 10 minutes. The palm trees and never ending beach were my selling points!

These were the first questions that I had:

  • How to find gluten free food Waikiki
  • How is Waikiki gluten free?
  • How are the gluten free restaurants in Honolulu?
  • What about other areas in Oahu?

I have not found any 100% gluten free restaurants on the island, but there are many that offer naturally gluten free food and are conscience about allergens. If you find any that are 100% gluten free, please let me know!

And if you didn’t know, Hawaii is expensive, so get your pocket books out because it will not be cheap.

Interesting Fact: The Cathedral of Our Lady Peace was built in 1843. It is the oldest Catholic cathedral used continuously in all of the United States.

Finding Your Piece of Paradise

We stayed in a lovely hotel right by the beach.

I usually stay at places with a kitchen.  But here, we opted for a hotel where we could get a gluten free breakfast and we had a mini fridge.

I found there were enough restaurants that I could eat at.

I always had leftovers from supper. This way I could have a meal handy in our fridge.

There were tons of treats that I could find at the grocery stores.

Gluten Free Groceries in Oahu

The stores always have some GF options for you. I found cereals, granola bars and some gluten free pasta. I eat a lot of whole foods, so this is also not a problem. Oahu has Safeway, Foodland Farms and Times Supermarket.

Down to Earth was a great find. My eyes lit up when I found snacks I could grab after spending time at the beach.

They many locations, but I checked out the one at 2525 South King Street, Honolulu, plus 4 other locations on Oahu and Maui.

Jet Setting to Oahu

We had a stop over in the United States on our way. We took Air Canada and then United. I packed a meal on the flight and didn’t bother with a flight meal. If you are researching what airlines have, here are some important links:

My Tools on the Road

When there are not 100% GF restaurants, I used my NIMA a lot.

I was vacationing here in 2019. Subsequently in 2020 NIMA was sold to another company and they are not selling the product any longer. I hope for my sake and everyone else’s, that they start producing the product again. It was very helpful.

Once the food arrived at the table, you took one piece of the meal and swabbed the meal as best as you could.

Then I would use a disposal testing cartridge to test it for gluten.

It saved me many times from eating something that would make me sick.

Best things to do in Honolulu

Pearl Harbour

Going to see Pearl Harbour is a must while visiting Honolulu. You can check their website out for tour and ticket options for your family.

We visited the USS Arizona Memorial, Bowfin Submarine Museum and visited the USS Oklahoma Memorial. Remember that they have increased security there and you will have put your bag in a locker before entering.

Snorkeling

If you travel to Hanauma Bay, they have some fantastic snorkeling to try. You take a short hike down into the bay. They are closed on Tuesday and they do charge an entrance fee per person of approximately $7.50 USD.

Waikiki Beach

We loved this beach area. While there are many people also enjoying the beach, there is still a lot of room to enjoy yourself. My husband went for a jog everyday in the morning along the boardwalk, while I just enjoyed the sand.

  1. Teddy s Bigger Burgers Teddy s staff is always helpful with allergen inquiries. At last check their buns were dairy-free, but have a may contain milk warning. If concerned about that potential cross-contamination, they make a great burger salad and have dairy-free dressing options. They have a location in every major town on the island.
